Caitlin Moran: ‘Coil fitting left me traumatised’

Writer Caitlin Moran says she has had long-lasting physical and mental complications from a “bad IUD fitting”.

The IUD, commonly known as ‘the coil’, is a contraceptive device inserted into the uterus by a doctor or a nurse.

Advice on the NHS website suggests the procedure can be “uncomfortable” and advises recipients to take painkillers after the procedure.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Naga Munchetty, Caitlin said she had “two or three periods a month” for six months after the fitting.

She also said the next time she had a medical procedure, her body “went into shock and fear” causing her to faint twice.

Caitlin stressed she didn’t want anybody to be put off from having the “incredible form of contraception” fitted, but is calling for pain relief to be offered as standard when undergoing the procedure.
