New 'Delta plus' variant causing concern in India
The Delta strain was said to be responsible for the deadly second wave of infections in India. Now cases have been recorded of the Delta strain with an additional mutation, to form the so-called Delta plus variant.
India's health ministry says studies showed that the so-called Delta plus variant spreads more easily and binds more easily to lung cells. It's too early to tell whether the variant poses a significant threat.
Dr Lancelot Pinto, Consultant Pulmonologist at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, explains what research into the variant has shown.
