South Africa Covid-19: Medical worker 'sounds the alarm'
A clinical technologist in South Africa says he wanted to "sound the alarm" about the third wave of Covid-19 when he posted a video on social media.
In the video, Bayanda Gumede, who is Chief Nephrology Technologist at a private renal clinic for kidney diseases, says 'he's having a day from hell' and that Covid-19 is 'wreaking havoc'. He says oxygen is kept only for those who are 'literally gasping for air'.
He told Newsday that the third wave has hit Gauteng province worse than the first two - and that some patients are waiting 2-3 days in casualty before they can get a bed.
"Ambulances sometimes wait in the parking lot for hours and they queue just to get into casualty. I get calls from people crying, begging me to admit their family members."
