Injured Serena pulls out of Wimbledon in tears

Wimbledon 2021: Serena Williams retires injured against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

At Wimbledon it was a really emotional scene as the tennis legend Serena Williams retired hurt from her match. She had a heavily strapped thigh and slipped in the fifth game then fell a few games later and was in tears. On Instagram she said she was heartbroken that she had to withdraw thanks to injury. ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Newsday’s sports reporter Isaac Fanin spoke to her compatriot Tracy Austin – a former Wimbledon winner herself - about the impact the 39-year-old sportswoman has had on the game.

“She’s had a tremendous impact. First of all with her longevity – with Roger Federer she has changed players minds about how long you can play the game. It used to be, 15 years ago, that when you got to 28 or 29 the press would start asking about retiring - very few players played past 30.

“And as a minority I think she’s given young ladies, and young men for that matter, the realisation that – Serena came from Compton, California and did not have a lot growing up - with hard work and commitment going after your dreams a lot can come true.â€
