Indonesia surge could see a million new Covid cases daily
Indonesia is currently battling multiple outbreaks and an alarming spike in Covid cases. Two million Covid cases have recently been recorded, attributed to increased holiday travel and the Delta variant. President Joko Widodo has announced a lockdown on its main island Java, as well as the tourism destination of Bali. The lockdown will last two weeks and aims to reduce the number of cases to below 10,000 a day.
Dr Dicky Budiman, an epidemiologist at Griffith university in Queensland Australia, believes the worst case scenario could see one million new cases and 5,000 deaths daily. He believes that the current lockdown of two weeks will not be enough to curb the rise.
