Covid: What will the impact be as England unlocks?

"We're about to immunise young people by infection rather than vaccination. You can either get vaccinated or you can get infected. The delta variant will find you."

Britain is forging ahead with the final stage of unlocking covid-19 restrictions in England on 19 July, despite rising numbers of infections caused by the delta variant.

Ministers confirmed there will be no legal requirement to wear masks in shops and that it would be up to train and bus operators to decide if they should be worn on public transport.

It's been called an experiment - one that's being carefully watched by other countries and scientists to see what the impact will be.

Professor James Naismith, Director of the Rosalind Franklin Institute and Professor of Structural Biology at the University of Oxford, is concerned that it will mean more Long-Covid and illness in young people. He advises anyone unvaccinated and vulnerable to shield for the next 4-6 weeks.

"We're about to immunise young people by infection rather than vaccination. You can either get vaccinated or you can get infected. The delta variant will find you. By letting the virus get to very high numbers, it will spill out and find the vulnerable who are not vaccinated."
