Community members in Soweto try to stop looters

South African citizens have been confronting looters to help control the violence that has engulfed the country following the imprisonment of the former President Jacob Zuma.

Bongekile Macupe is a journalist with City Press in Johannesburg. She told Newsday what she found in her neighbourhood in Soweto:

“I came across a roadblock and I was told by the community members that the looters were targeting the Indian garage... and they decided they were not going to allow that to happen. They were stopping every car, searching and they would confiscate the looted goods and call the cops. Police were outnumbered and they could not do anything.”
