Vaccine warning: "They won't be able to catch up"
The World Health Organisation says the number of children not receiving routine vaccines rose in every region of the world last year because of the pandemic. 23 million young children did not receive jabs against diseases including measles, diptheria and polio.
Saad Omer is Director of the Yale Institute for Global Health in Connecticut in the US. He told Newsday:
“We vaccinate children against highly contagious diseases. The rates of infections are being kept low artificially because of social distancing. So when people come back to their normal, you are at a higher risk of an increase in outbreaks. The logistical disruption due to Covid ... makes it more difficult to get vaccinated."
