'People are just ransacking anything that they find in front of them'

As South Africa calls in the army to quell the unrest sweeping the country, even medical clinics have not been spared from looting.

Dr Dulcy Rakumakoe runs two clinics in Soweto and in Evaton, south of Johannesburg, where medicines and equipment were stolen. She told Newsday:

“In a clinic there are things that you can take and can go sell. Like ultrasound machines, chairs, computers. I think people are just ransacking anything that they find in front of them. We are just distraught. There was just no police presence. It was like we were watching the purge, people were going in and doing what they pleased with no law enforcement.”
