South Africa unrest: 'They are looting nappies for their children'
The authorities in South Africa have deployed 25,000 troops to contain rioting and looting which has spread across the country.
Zikhona Tshona is a TV journalist with Newzroom Afrika in Johannesburg. She told Newsday about a video widely shared on social media of a young boy involved in the turmoil.
“You see a young boy who has participated in looting, just to get the basics. The child has a bag with clothes, underwear and shoes. The clothes that he is wearing are dirty and ripped. The reason that video got so much attention is that he doesn't have that much. This child was just trying his best to get whatever he can to survive.”
She added that for some women who have participated in the looting, “they are looting food, they are looting nappies for their children.”
