Volunteers create a sensory garden to combat loneliness in Coventry’s War Memorial Park

A garden to be enjoyed through sound, sight, taste, smell and touch whilst having fun.

In celebration of Coventry War Memorial Park’s 100th anniversary, volunteers from The Friends of War Memorial Park have created an interactive garden during lockdown that can be enjoyed by all.

The garden came about after park users were surveyed, and suggested an area suitable for users living with disability. So a community sensory garden was built around the five senses: touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell, and also that people would have fun when visiting the space. Seating has been positioned in a way that encourages people to speak with one another, therefore reduce the isolation that some park users feel.

It took three and a half months between March and June to create this space, with twenty six volunteers and well in excess of 700 hours of volunteering. They now welcome the community to interact with the different areas and even go home with some edible crops.

Sue Konrad from the Friends of War Memorial Park had the vision for the garden. She met with ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ CWR’s Vic Minett.
