China floods: 'cities need to adapt to more extreme weather'

The death toll has risen in the floods that hit China’s Henan province, and there are concerns that the warning system was not sufficient to protect people.

Christian Shepherd is Beijing correspondent for London's Financial Times newspaper.

He told Newsday he expects more bad news from rural areas over the coming days.

“The official line is that this was a once in 5,000 years event. But there is still a lot of worry that if there is going to be more extreme weather in the coming years, that cities like Zhengzhou need to have more robust warning systems. Even though they did issue red alerts, school wasn't cancelled and people weren’t told you shouldn’t go outside.â€
