South Africa lockdown: 'People want basic necessities'
South Africa is lifting some of its Covid restrictions, despite less than five percent of the population being vaccinated. Restaurants, bars and church gatherings are allowed again, but with a limit on the numbers of people.
Juniour Khumalo is a political journalist with CityPress in Johannesburg. He told Newsday:
“People are concerned about the risk (of opening up) but the recent unrest has shown that a lot of people would rather go to work. If you look at the unrest, it resulted in people looting bread and flour. People are desperate at this point so they would rather have the economy being opened up a bit so at least they can get the basic necessities that they need.”
