US mask guidance: 'it is Groundhog day'

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says vaccinated people should wear face masks in indoor public spaces, specifically in areas with high transmission rates. This is a change to advice issued a few months ago and it comes as the more infectious Delta variant rages across the US.

Peter Chin-Hong is professor of medicine and an infectious disease specialist at the University of California in San Francisco. He told Newsday:

“Our country is on fire once again with Covid. It is Groundhog day and I think people are very disappointed. The CDC deliberated for quite a while before releasing these recommendations. This is not a mandate but a recommendation.”

“Not all jurisdictions will go along with these recommendations. Some states like Arkansas have actually banned local mask mandates.”
