Heart donations can come from illicit drug users
Two new studies show that hearts donated by people who used illicit drugs during their lifetime can be safely transplanted, even if the donor died of a drug overdose. Using these hearts, once considered too risky, could greatly widen the pool of donors and cut wait times for people in need. Dr Ravi Dhingra, a cardiologist, is a senior author of one of the studies and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
