'Tortilla is life in Mexico': So why are they costing more?

People across Mexico have noticed a significant increase in the cost of the tortilla - the corn-based flatbread which is ubiquitous on dining tables across the country. Many Mexicans use the price of the tortilla as a barometer for day to day living. So what's behind the price hike?

Journalist Franc Contreras is based in Mexico City.

"Corn is not the only thing that's gone up in price... In May, the price of tomatoes rose 85% over the previous May, 2020, so you can see that prices are really starting to sky-rocket and as folks know, the hardest hit are often the poor."
