Afghanistan: Street fighting rages
Fierce battles are taking place in three Afghan cities - Kandahar, Herat and Lashkar Gah. The health charity Medecins San Frontieres has a partner hospital in Lashkar Gah in the southern Helmand province. The city is under heavy assault from the Taliban.
Dr Wali Wullah is deputy medical coordinator for MSF in Kabul. He told Newsday about the conditions at the hospital.
“Most patients are suffering from bullet injuries and IED injuries. Our staff are stuck inside the hospital. They cannot reach their homes. The hospital is ready to receive trauma wounded patients but access to the hospital has become difficult. Most of our staff cannot reach us and those staff that are in the hospital are a bit tired.”
