Afghanistan: 'everyone is in a phase of panic'

Gunmen have attacked the home of the Afghan defence minister in Kabul. Bismillah Khan Mohammadi was not at home when gunmen detonated a car bomb. And fighting continues in Lashkar Gah in Helmand province between Taliban militants and government forces.

Freshta Karim is a human rights activist living in Kabul. She told Newsday:

“The first thing everyone talks about when we meet each other is ‘what is your plan B’? Everyone is in a phase of panic. If the Taliban comes and takes over, I and people like me will be on their list. They are against anything that allows women to be empowered.â€

“Last night many Afghans - including myself - we went on the streets, thousands of us shouting for peace. That was an act of showing that they are against the Taliban. But the moment we realise our life is in danger I think the logical thing is to leave.â€
