Footage of the inside of a prison in Tehran has been leaked following a cyberattack. It shows guards punching, kicking and dragging inmates across the floor.
The alleged hackers said they wanted to show the grim conditions at Evin prison.
Iran did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent to its U.N. mission in New York over the leak.
Masih Alinejad is an Iranian journalist and political activist who now lives in New York. She told Newsday that many political prisoners were held at the prison.
“These hackers were able to film inside Evin prison, one of the most notorious prisons in Iran. For years and years I have been interviewing the families of political prisoners and they were complaining about how they have been beaten up by guards, some of them got killed in prison because of being tortured. The officials denied that. But now because of these hackers you can see the horrible situation in Evin.”
“I got goosebumps when I watched how the guards were savagely beating up prisoners. It reminds me of the time a blogger got killed after being beaten up by the guards. In this video you see how they are treating prisoners who barely can walk."
