‘Chained wives’: The women whose husbands refuse divorce
There are almost 300,000 Jewish people in the UK according to the 2011 census.
Around 16% of them - roughly 48,000 - describe themselves as orthodox, which means they strongly adhere to Jewish law.
Newsnight has learned that at least 100 women from the orthodox community are believed to be stuck in unhappy marriages because their husbands won’t give them a divorce.
Under orthodox Jewish law, the break-up has to be granted by the man in order for it to be valid. But when that doesn’t happen, it leaves the woman stuck in a failed marriage, preventing her from moving on with her life.
Sima Kotecha reports.
