Ethiopia Tigray conflict: Food convoy reaches Mekelle

Over 100 trucks of food aid have reached the capital of Tigray, Mekelle. It follows accusations by the UN that the government is blocking aid from reaching the region. Ten months of fighting has left 90% of Tigray’s population in need of urgent humanitarian assistance - about five million people.

The United Nations says 400,000 people are facing famine-like conditions.

But Gordon Weiss of the World Food Programme says the trucks will only supply the region for a week - and that they are now having to deliver aid to the Amhara and Afar regions as well.

"We need about 100 trucks going into Tigray every day to stay on top of the developing crisis... The government of Ethiopia is very nervous about sending supplies into an area which is controlled by enemy Tigrayan forces, so it's a complicated negotiation."
