California: Newsom set to survive recall vote

The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has said he's "humbled and grateful" after early results suggested he'd successfully beaten off an attempt to replace him before the end of his term.

The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s US partner CBS projects that the governor will prevail, with about two-thirds of voters backing him and more than 60% of the vote tallied.

The vote to recall Gavin Newsom was initiated by the Republicans after criticism of his handling of the pandemic. They threw their support behind conservative radio host Larry Elder.

"No conservative Republican is ever going to win in the state of California ever... If you can't reach people in the middle, then it's not going to happen in the state of California."
