‘A child sexual abuse survivor has never been honoured in that way.’

The Australian government is letting down women and their safety - that’s the view of 26-year-old Grace Tame, who was recently honoured with the Australian of the Year 2021 award. She was 15 when she was sexually abused by a 58-year-old teacher at her school.

In 2019, she took on a legal case to be able to publicly speak out in her own name, through the ‘Let Her Speak' campaign. At the time, sexual assault survivors in Tasmania were prohibited from speaking out in their own name - even if their attacker had been found guilty. The law was changed last year. She spoke to Emma Barnett about why the campaign was so important to her and why Australia’s consent and grooming laws need to be revised.
