Shock at Malawi MP's suicide in parliament
Former deputy speaker, Clement Chiwaya, took a gun into the building and shot himself.
In Malawi, a prominent politician has shot himself dead inside the country's parliament building - leaving the nation in shock, and questions being asked about how he could bring a firearm past security so easily.
Clement Chiwaya, who was a wheelchair user after he contracted polio at the age of two, served as deputy speaker between 2014 and 2019.
In a note he left shortly before the shooting, he wrote about a dispute he was engaged in with parliamentary officials over the ownership of a specially adapted vehicle, saying he was tired of begging for what belonged to him. In a statement released after his death, parliament said that the matter was still in court.
Journalist, Peter Jegwa, says he'll be missed:
"He was an inspiration to persons with disabilities. He was seen as a role model, a campaigner for rights for people with disabilities, something that's also being talked about a lot in the aftermath of this tragic death."
