Liverpool football legend John Barnes speaks out about racist abuse directed at players

From abuse directed at players, both in the ground and online, to the row over taking the knee, the issue of racism is one which football once again seems to be battling.

One of the most powerful - and shocking - photos in the history of the English game shows John Barnes, in his Liverpool kit, backheeling a banana off the pitch after it was thrown at him during a Merseyside derby.

That was back in 1988.

But how far has football – and society – come in tackling the problem?

The former Liverpool player has released a new book, “The Uncomfortable Truth About Racism”.
