Former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to launch a new social media network, called TRUTH Social. He has said this will rival social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and that he may also launch a streaming service offering services similar to Amazon.
Social media played a pivotal role in Mr Trump's bid for the White House and was his favourite means of communication as president. But Mr Trump was banned from Twitter and suspended from Facebook after his supporters stormed the US Capitol. An early version of his latest venture, TRUTH Social, will be open to invited guests next month, and will have a "nationwide rollout" within the first three months of 2022, according to a statement by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG). The new site is currently just a registration page.
Philip Bump, national correspondent for the Washington Post, explains the strategy behind this and the challenges that Trump may face.
