Tougher laws needed to stop people becoming radicalised, says ex-counter terror head Mark Rowley
ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Secretary Priti Patel has told MPs the terror threat facing them has been raised from moderate to substantial after the murder of Sir David Amess in his Southend constituency last week.
The man charged with the murder of Sir David had taken part in the government’s deradicalisation programme, Prevent.
The programme is voluntary but today the former anti-terror chief of UK policing told Newsnight it would be more helpful if it were compulsory for those identified as possibly posing a risk.
In his first interview since the death of Sir David, Sir Mark Rowley also said a lack of integration with mainstream British society could be a factor in encouraging people to adopt an extremist ideology.
Newsnight's Sima Kotecha started by asking how he felt on hearing that another MP had been killed.
