Disability advocate: ‘I've been told that I'm a fire hazard’
Broadcaster and disability advocate Sophie Morgan says there are too many loopholes in the equality act for disabled people.
The law, which came into force in 2010, says companies and organisations have a duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people.
Speaking to 5 Live’s Nicky Campbell, Sophie says the word reasonable is “so vague and so wide-reaching, that reasonable means often [disabled people] don’t get the adjustments we need”.
“I’ve been carried up stairs, I’ve been refused access, I’ve been denied entry, I’ve been told I’m a fire hazard I need to leave,” she said.
Her comments come after Israeli Minister, Karine Elharrar was unable attend the COP26 summit because it was not wheelchair accessible.
