How watching Squid Game reminded me of my torture

"Why Squid Game reminds me of my years in a Syrian prison." That's the title of an article by Omar Alshogre, a Syrian refugee, who says the recent Netflix dystopian drama, 'Squid Game', in which participants are killed for entertainment until only one person is left, has very real parallels to the world of Syria's jails.

He spent three years in prison there, including in the notorious Saydnaya military prison, for being a human rights activist who opposed Bashar al Assad's regime.

He told Newsday's Tom Hagler about his experience - in an interview which includes upsetting details.

"In every character I was seeing myself or seeing my former cellmates. And when someone dies, it's someone who died next to me in prison. I can relive the moment, the pain of having to choose between two people you love, the pain of seeing both people you love dying and the pain of them forcing you to torture the people you love."
