Malcolm X assassination: Convictions to be quashed

Two men convicted of the 1965 murder of US civil rights leader Malcolm X are to have their convictions quashed. Malcolm X was shot dead aged 39 at a New York City ballroom in front of his family.

Muhammad Aziz and Khalil Islam did not get the justice they deserved, the Manhattan District Attorney said. Prosecutor Cyrus Vance Jr said the FBI and police had withheld evidence that would have likely resulted in their acquittal.

Aziz and Islam - along with a third man, Thomas Hagan - were convicted of the murder and sentenced to life in prison.

An investigation found that the government withheld crucial evidence about one of the most notorious murders of the civil rights era. The investigation was prompted by a Netflix documentary called Who Killed Malcolm X; evidence for it was unearthed by two men, Les Payne, and Abdur-Rahman Muhammad.

Mr Muhammad gave his reaction to the exoneration to Newshour's Razia Iqbal.
