Covid vaccine: WHO estimates almost half a million lives saved in Europe
A study by the World Health Organization estimates that almost 470,000 people in Europe who are over the age of 60 have had their lives saved by Covid vaccination.
The study looked at 33 countries where data was available for Covid related deaths and Covid vaccinations.
Dr Richard Pebody heads up the Europe High-threat Pathogen Team at the WHO and is the study's lead author. He explains that his team only looked at the direct impact of vaccination and that resulting figures are a "conservative estimate" that does not take into account the indirect benefits of vaccination, such as cutting transmission and preventing healthcare system overload.
