Mark Cavendish: 'I heard my ribs go on the impact'

Speaking to 5 Live's Nihal Arthanayake, cyclist Mark Cavendish gives details of his recent crash in Ghent, Belgium, just a week before he was due to break for the end of the season.

"I knew I'd done damage before I'd even stopped rolling" says Mark. He suffered two broken ribs and punctured lung. "The ribs, the pain I can deal with...the lung thing is the health I have to look at," he added.

His wife and young children were spectating at the velodrome. "The first thing I wanted to do was get up so they hopefully know I'm okay" he said, adding that "they'd left their seats by then to come down so they didn't even see me get up."

Mark's not been on a bike since, but said he reckons "by next week [he] should be alright to be on the indoor bike."
