Our hidden young carers

Tens of thousands of children in England are being failed by a system that’s supposed to support them, as they support their families - because councils don't know they exist.

Tens of thousands of young carers in England may be missing out on support because councils don’t even know they exist - despite them having a duty to identify and assess children who are caring. A Freedom of Information request suggests that local authorities are unaware of 75% of young people who are responsible for caring for others. For 5 Minutes On, the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Jeremy Cooke meets Amy, who's 13, and Kim, who's 10. Together, they cook, clean, shop and provide constant, essential support to their mum who has kidney failure.
