Western leaders promise economic sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine
Moscow says it has no plan to attack Ukraine and has accused Western nations of provocation ahead of a conference call between the US President and Russia.
With Russian troops massing on the border with Ukraine, the US has threatened severe economic consequences in the case of an invasion. But Moscow says it has no plan to attack Ukraine and has accused Western nations of provocation.
In a conference call on Monday night, the Western leaders formed a joint strategy "to impose significant and severe harm on the Russian economy" should Russia launch an invasion according to the White House.
This comes ahead of a video call between US President Joe Biden and President Vladimir Putin.
Dr Alina Polyakova is President and CEO of The Center for European Policy Analysis in Washington DC. She says: “Russia hasn’t been deterred by economic sanctions” in the past adding it will require a greater effort from western nations to quash Russian military aggression.
