Afghanistan: UK left many priority Afghan evacuees behind
The UK's handling of the Afghan evacuation after the Taliban seized Kabul was dysfunctional and chaotic, a whistleblower who worked the UK government department in charge has said.
Among the people who thought they would be evacuated by the UK were alumni from the Chevening scholarship programme, who were listed on an official British government website as being a priority. Newshour spoke to one former scholar stuck in Afghanistan who is very worried for his future. He has not been named for his own safety.
A statement from the UK Foreign Office says: “Regrettably we were not able to evacuate all those we wanted to, but our commitment to them is enduring, and since the end of the operation we have helped more than 3000 individuals leave Afghanistan.”
