German raids: Suspected anti-vax link to Saxony leader death threats
Police in Germany's eastern state of Saxony have launched a series of raids after death threats were made against Premier Michael Kretschmer for backing coronavirus measures. Far-right anti-vaccination activists are suspected of plotting attacks with crossbows or other weapons. Saxony has the lowest Covid vaccine take-up in Germany.
Michaela Kuefner, Chief Political Editor for the DW (Deutsche Welle) news channel, says the area has been a "hotbed for unnannounced protests violating Covid measures" and that there is a "growing frequency of threats against politicians" in Germany as a whole. She described Michael Kretschmer as a popular personality, who had been known for his scepticism regarding coronavirus restriction, but has recently changed his opinion.
