Climate change: New York bill bans natural gas for new builds

New York City Council has voted to ban the use of natural gas in new buildings in an effort to move the city from fossil fuels to cleaner forms of energy. The new measure bans most new buildings from being supplied with gas or oil for heating, hot water and cooking, with electricity to be used instead.

Pete Sikora of the advocacy group New York Communities for Change explains why this has come into effect, and says that New York's electricity grid, that has faltered in the past, is set to cope with 2,000 new electrified buildings each year.

"It's a huge signal to the world that it's time to go off fossil fuels."
