International community opens door to Afghan aid

The UN Security Council has adopted a US-proposed resolution which will allow humanitarian aid to be sent to Afghanistan. Aid agencies have warned that millions of people are at risk of starvation.

When the Taliban took over Afghanistan four months ago, billions of dollars in aid and assets were frozen by the West. This new resolution will work around these economic sanctions.

But there continues to be concern about how the Taliban might use the resumption of international aid to bolster their position of power.

Roya Rahmani is a former Afghan Ambassador to the US.

"Regardless of what we do, by even providing very basic support, you are putting them on lifeline, but if you cut the lifeline, whose lives are you cutting out? It is the people of Afghanistan, it is the most vulnerable people. Millions of children, and women and most vulnerable youth will be in danger of starvation and deprivation."
