How the Tequila fish came back from 'extinction'

The small and colourful little Tequila fish, once declared extinct because the water where it originated was so polluted, has been reintroduced to its native Mexico after being bred in an aquarium at Chester Zoo. The reintroduction is being held up as an example of how freshwater ecosystems and species can be saved. While conservationists initially released 1,500 fish, they say the population is now expanding into the river system.

Victoria Gill, the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s science correspondent, describes how the local community, the people who live close to the Tequila fish release site in Jalisco, Mexico, have played a key role, by monitoring the water quality of the rivers and lakes and created a healthier and cleaner enivironment where the fish could thrive.
