Colorado wildfires: "There were no sirens, no warnings, nothing"

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated and hundreds of homes destroyed by the fire which spread rapidly because of high winds.

A Colorado resident who's lost her home to the massive wildfire engulfing parts of the state says the fire spread so rapidly that she had to flee for her life before she'd even received any official warning of the danger.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated and hundreds of homes have been destroyed by the fires which spread rapidly because of high winds. They were ignited by sparks from power lines toppled by the wind.

Brenda Leighton from Superior, Colorado, was working from the home she's lived in for the past 18-years when she received a call from her sister telling her to get out as fast as possible. She says she only realised the danger when she went to her front door and was overwhelmed by smoke. Her entire neighbourhood was rapidly destroyed.

"There were no sirens, no warnings, nothing... The live news in Denver had not covered it when I left. It was that fast... Whole areas of beautiful homes are gone."
