Meet Nikki May, the woman behind one of the most anticipated books of 2022
Described as Sex in the City with a killer edge, Nikki May’s debut novel Wahala is a story about three 30+ mixed race friends who live in London.
The novel, which has just been released, provoked a bidding-war between publishers and it’s already being made into a ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ drama series.
Nikki is 56 and Nigerian-British and says that she decided to write Wahala because she wanted to read a book that had people like her in it.
“I’m mixed race and middle class. A lot of books written by black people centre on struggle, but it’s not a universal experience. I wanted to read about characters whose lives include jollof rice, cornrows and carjacking in the same breath as Ubers, focaccia and Soho House.â€
You can listen to Nikki’s full conversation with Anita Rani on Woman’s Hour via ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Sounds.
