Pacific volcano: Uncertainty remains as eruption severs communication
Tongan Deputy Head of Mission in Australia says uncertainty remains in Tonga after a volcanic eruption caused power cuts on the island and severed communications
The Deputy Head of Mission for the Togan High Commission in Australia says uncertainty remains in Tonga following a volcanic eruption.
Curtis Tu’ihalangingie said they are currently relying on support being given by both the Australian and New Zealand government. Each country has sent aircrafts to inspect the damage done. These flights are returning with shots and videos of the island that have been taken to see what is happening on the ground in Tonga.
“Then we can make judgement from there,” he said, “and I am confident that we will be able to connect with our government, possibly tomorrow or Wednesday, in that way we will receive the priorities of what we really need in Tonga, what the people really need”.
Up to 80,000 people there could be affected, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) told the ѿý.
The eruption triggered a tsunami, which cut off power supplies, and severed communications making it difficult to reach and assist people across the island.
