Liberia mourns those who died in church stampede
At least 29 people, including 11 children and a pregnant woman, died in a stampede at an open-air Pentecostal church service in Liberia on Wednesday.
Liberia's President George Weah has declared three days of national mourning after visiting the scene of tragedy in a suburb of Monrovia where at least 29 people were killed during an open-air church service.
Armed men are said to have attacked the worshippers as the revival meeting was ending. A stampede occurred. Eleven children and a pregnant woman were among the dead.
One witness, Moses Kumeh, explained what he saw: “When the service finished the group going out met with the group coming in. Men at the entrance were attacking people leaving the service.â€
The Liberian Minister of Information, Ledgerhood Rennie, said the authorities were doing their best to ensure security in the country and that a full investigation was now underway.
“As a result of our civil conflict we have these unfortunate youths who have not had an opportunity at finding skills to earn a living for themselves so they’re street people who usually walk around looking for any opportunity to get a living. We’ve been trying as a government in rehabilitate them but some have just refused.â€
