The term ‘ladette’ was first coined in 1994 to describe young women who behaved boisterously, assertively and loved a drink. Some considered it a feminist movement – allowing girls to act ‘just like men’ but others including many media outlets used the term to demonise women they saw as acting ‘too blokey.’

Comedian Shappi Khorsandi – who grew up in the '90’s – explores ‘ladette culture’ in her new comedy stand up tour, ‘It Was the 90s!’

Here she tells Anita Rani what it was like for her in the ’90’s, how most of it was about drinking ‘until you fancied someone’ and how the idea of self-care really didn’t apply.
