Barry Cryer - a legend of British comedy

Barry Cryer worked with most of Britain's comedy greats. “I haven’t had a career, just a series of incidents. I’ve been dogged by good luck all my life.”

Barry Cryer, a legend of British comedy, has died at the age of 86. During a career spanning sixty years, he worked alongside Morecambe and Wise, Kenny Everett, Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson, Bob Hope, the Two Ronnies and David Frost. He was the secret sauce to thousands of comedy routines. It was a career that went from student shows at Leeds University - and the Windmill Theatre - to writing Morecambe and Wise TV specials. He described himself as merely a comedy tradesman - “I haven’t had a career, just a series of incidents. I’ve been dogged by good luck all my life.” For 5 Minutes On, Gyles Brandreth shares with Sarah Montague on ѿý Radio 4's World At One, his reflections on a "funny and generous man" and those regular phone calls.
