Speed Skating - Men's 1000m Final
Can Britain's Cornelius Kersten, the first British long track figure skater in 30 years, cause an upset in the men's 1000m at Beijing 2022?
Coverage of the men's 1000m speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
After ending 19th in the 1500m, Cornelius Kersten goes in his favoured event. Raised in the Netherlands by a Dutch father and British mother, Kersten has recorded three top-10 finishes on the World Cup circuit this season, and was fourth in January’s European Championship. Another Dutch skater, the reigning Olympic champion Kjeld Nuis won’t be able to defend his title after having an off-day in their trials and only finishing fourth. That will probably be a relief to the rest of the field, as Nuis looked in excellent form when he retained his 1500m crown, breaking the Olympic record, earlier at these Games. Compatriot Thomas Krol took silver in that competition, and the reigning European 1000m champion may be the man to beat.
