Russian and US envoys clash at UN Security Council
There have been angry clashes between Russian and US envoys at the UN Security Council, after the US called a meeting to discuss Moscow's build-up of troops on its borders with Ukraine. Russia has placed an estimated 100,000 troops, tanks, artillery and missiles near Ukraine's frontiers.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the mobilisation of troops was the biggest Europe had seen in decades.
Her Russian counterpart accused the US of fomenting hysteria and unacceptable interference in Russia's affairs.
Russia's deputy permanent representative at the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy spoke to Newsday, regarding disagreements with the US during the meeting. He said "It was a classic example of megaphone diplomacy, we do not agree with their position, because there are only claims and allegations", adding "we don't think we should explain anything to anybody".
