Tonga goes into lockdown after first cases of Covid detected

Tonga is entering a lockdown because its first five cases of Covid have been detected. Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni confirmed two port workers had tested positive. Officials later confirmed three more cases in family members. The archipelago of islands has been trying to recover from the tsunami and volcanic eruption which hit the country last month.

The government had put in closely controlled measures to stop the virus from coming to the islands. Michael Morrah, the Pacific correspondent for the Newshub New Zealand, says the number of cases may look "relatively harmless" but action has to be taken to protect the population of 107,000 and the fragile healthcare system.

"Tonga can't really get a break at the moment."
