South African firm produces mRNA Covid vaccine

Scientists in South Africa have produced a copy of the Moderna Covid vaccine, raising the prospect of wider access to jabs in poorer parts of the world.

Researchers with Afrigen Biologics in Cape Town backed by the World Health Organization hope to begin human trials in November.

Dr Caryn Fenner is the chief scientist who helped develop the vaccine. She says the first African-produced vaccine “puts the power in our hands to be able to produce our own vaccines”. She hopes the first jabs will be available for public consumption at the start of 2023.
