Gynaecologist accused of sexually assaulting over 200 women at UCLA

The university said it hoped the financial settlement would provide "healing and closure" for the women involved.

The University of California has agreed to pay out nearly a quarter of a billion dollars to settle claims by hundreds of women that they were sexually assaulted by a campus gynaecologist.

The man, James Heaps, already faces criminal charges for twenty one other sexual offences involving seven women. He has pleaded not guilty.

Mr Heaps was based at the University of California, Los Angeles student health centre during his 35-year career between 1983 and 2018.

Hundreds of women, some of whom had cancer, say they were abused by him.

Newsday spoke to John C. Manly, one of the plaintiffs' attorneys.
